GO HARD or GO HOME!
How hard do you really work when you exercise?
Whether you go to the gym, run, cycle, attend fitness classes or take part in another type of fitness pursuit how much effort do you REALLY put in?
Answer honestly.......100%? 80%? 50%? less than 50%?!
I am not saying that you should push yourself to maximum every training session; as this can have negative as well as positive effects, but every training session you should put 100% effort in. Whether you love it or hate it, during your workout put the effort in to maximise your time. Training for 1 hour equates to around 4% of your day, is it too much to ask to put your full effort into this hour?
The more effort you put in the better the results and the quicker you will reach your goal. It really is that simple!
Working in the fitness industry for a number of years i have come across lots of different types of exercisers; all with different habits and patterns - time of exercise (morning, afternoon, evening), type of exercise (weights, cardio, classes), specific routines (Chest Monday, Back Tuesday etc) to name but a few. A very common habit I come across is people not utilising there time to its potential! Time for most people is very precious and often do not have time to waste. Think of how many times you have used lack of time as an excuse.
When you exercise do you have a structured plan and time frame you work to or do you just go the gym; do a bit of this and a bit of that so you can say that you've been to the gym?
If you fall into the latter, change it! Save time and get results. Do not be the person that goes to the gym for 2 hours everyday but never changes body shape, improves strength or increases fitness levels.
For most health and fitness goals 45 minutes - 1 hour is a good amount of time to exercise for per session; ensure you include fitness, strength & flexibility work during your weekly plan. Avoid plateau and continue to improve by updating your programme every 6-8 weeks. See my previous blog about goal setting to help with programme design.
If you are unsure about how to design an appropriate training plan hire a personal trainer, they can help you tailor a training plan that works for you.
In summary tidy up your routine, maximise your time and cut down on chatting, save that for after over a protein shake or orange juice!
