New Year, New You?

Happy New Year!

Welcome to my blog, hope you all had a great Christmas?

This time of year is very busy in the fitness industry, a lot of people over indulge during the Christmas period and at the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve, after a mound of buffet food & a few too many drinks, promise that this is the year they will get fit, lose weight, give up smoking............New Year, New You?

Its great to hear everybody so motivated, setting goals and dreaming big! But the truth is a lot of people do not achieve their New Years resolutions!

This is not always through lack of effort, but usually because they have not really thought about what they want to achieve.

"Many people fail in life, not for lack of ability or brains or even courage, but simply because they have never organised their energies around a goal."  Elbert Hubbard, American philanthropist.

When setting any sort of goal you should always think SMART!

S - Specific; Make sure your goal is well defined

M- Measurable; Know when you have achieved your goal or how far away you are

A- Achievable; Can you achieve what you set out to do?

R - Realistic; Is it realistic given resources, knowledge & time?

T - Timed: Set a time limit, people work best to deadlines.

Example

None SMART goal - I want to lose weight

SMART goal - I want to lose 1 stone in weight by Friday 2nd March 2012.

People with SMART goals are far more likely to achieve their target than those with messy no specific goals.

When goal setting it is important to think long term but also set goals short term goals along the way, if your long term goal is to lose 4 stone don't expect it to happen over night you have to work hard to reach that goal, along the journey there will be many things that stand in your way, that is why it is so important to have smaller goals along the way these could be things such as running 5 minutes without stopping, walking up stairs without feeling out of breath or being able to perform a press up.

Remember to recognise success in all forms not just the end goal, taking small steps you are still moving forward towards your main aim.

When things get hard stay focused and picture how good you will feel when your goal is achieved!

Good Luck. 🙂
